DECEMBER 2004 NEWSLETTER

Extract from December Newsletter:

During September, children enjoyed an outing with Southern Right Charters on a whale watching trip. The day was a beautiful one, but the sea was a little rocky and so were a few tummies. We saw a whale and as soon as we reached dry land again, all was well and everyone enjoyed lunch.

AUGUST 2004 NEWSLETTER

Extract from August Newsletter:

Yes, you are right the shop has expanded to include service to unemployed women of the area (as donations allow).  The donations from Hermanus United Church (warm blankets) and Kipling Shoes (yes, shoes!) of Belguim has attracted needy women of the area.  August 25th saw a record day serving 46 children and 51 women collecting 1282 kg of recyclables in 2.5 hours.  No small feat for the volunteers serving all these. We can only sing their praise!

JUNE 2004 NEWSLETTER

Extract from June Newsletter:

Dreams came true on June 12th when a donation from Sweden enabled our adult volunteers to enjoy an outing to Cape Town to visit Robben Island and Table Mountain.  The day was especially exciting as it was the day for the Olympic Torch to visit the Mother City.  Even Nelson Mandela was at Robben Island but we missed seeing him by 15 minutes.  We did see the torch though at the top of Table Mountain.  Our cableway ride down gave us a spectacular view of the city lights flickering on.

APRIL 2004 NEWSLETTER

Extract from April Newsletter:

A new colourful sign announcing the Recycle Swop Shop 4 Kids marks our entrance.  Our numbers dipped in March due to school sports activities but our numbers are back up and approximately  45 children attend each week.

In April, we did more than collect recycleables, we collected garbage.  Everything laying on the streets that was not recycleable was collected. The children were rewarded with fresh apples from the orchards.  A local farmer donated fruit on a regular basis for 6 weeks and  I delivered apples to all the local daycare centres and the schools. The milk program continues as we get donations from local people.

FEBRUARY 2004 NEWSLETTER

Extract from February Newsletter:

The first year's operation of the Recycle Swop Shop has drawn to a close. The time has flown by for all of us and these children have taught us a lot! Overall, close to 400 children have been served by the shop and the same children have made Zwelihle a cleaner place. An incredible 10,126 kilograms of recyclables have been collected in the last 12 months. The occasion of our anniversary was celebrated with an outing to the beach for our top 15 collectors. Following the fun in the surf, children and volunteers were served a hamburger, chips and drinks. (Jointly sponsored by Spur and Maxitec).

Young Entrepreneur Certificates (sponsored by Learn to Earn) and R100 gifts from generous donors were awarded to Nkosekhaya Nojubalala and Nolita Langeni, top boy and girl collectors for the year. Trophy cups were sponsored by Walker Bay Recycling. Already children are eagerly collecting with the view to winning the cup next year! Since January, a milk program has begun at the Swop Shop. Each week a cup of milk is given to each child who attends irregardless of how much recyclable material they bring.

Donations from Switzerland and Germany are making it possible for us to purchase school supplies for the children to earn with their collections. A generous clothing donation arrived from Canada but the need for used clothing continues. We hope this year may bring help from local sources to construct a sheltered collection area before the rains of winter arrive.

OCTOBER 2003 NEWSLETTER

Extract from October Newsletter:

We now have 265 children registered in our data file (no duplicate cards either!). I admire Bulelwa's skill at keeping all of the record keeping for the children straight, a miracle of grand proportions!
On average, of 50 children attend each Wednesday. Routines have been going very well.

September marks the resumption of our educational and informational outings offered once a month to children who attend regularly and our loyal Helpers. Our trip to the annual Wild Flower Show held at our local Fernkloof Nature Reserve was a resounding success. Sixteen children enjoyed the beautiful arrangements done by the local botanical society. The children also took a hike through the reserve to the interpretive centre where cookies and cool drink were enjoyed by all. Bulelwa did an excellent job interpreting for the children. They absorbed the information and visual feast like sponges. More outings to the reserve are a must!
